Safety standard EN 61010-1:2001, CE marking
For placing a product on the market within the European Community, CE marking on the product, the packaging or the operating instructions is a mandatory requirement. For analogue and digital panel-mounted measuring instruments, the CE declaration of conformity confirms compliance with the European regulations (Low Voltage Directive, EMC Directive).
The CE marking is aimed less at the consumer; it is aimed at the market surveillance authorities, who derive compliance with the requirements of the harmonisation directives from the CE marking.
Mandatory standards are listed in Low Voltage Directive 73/23/EEC:
- Device standard DIN EN 60051
- Safety standard EN 61010-1:2001 (VDE 0411-1:2002, IEC 61010-1:2002)
To protect against dangerous body currents, according to the new safety standard EN 61010-1:2001, the air and creepage distances at the same working voltage had to be significantly increased compared to previous requirements. This further increased safety for the user.
Through elaborate design changes to panel-mounted measuring instruments, especially analogue switchboard instruments, the requirements of EN 61010-1:2001 have been met. This development is protected by European patent EP1 508 786 A2. All analogue panel-mounted measuring instruments offered comply with this standard.

Panel-mounted measuring instruments are predominantly used in building installation. This means they must be marked with CAT III and the working voltage permissible for the device, e.g. CAT III 600V. The working voltage is measured between the device terminals and earth. Example:
A measuring instrument marked “CAT III 600V” can be used to measure in a 1000 V three-phase network. The maximum phase-to-earth voltage is 600 V.
