What is residual current monitoring (RCM)?
An RCM device (Residual Current Monitoring) continuously monitors differential or residual currents – both alternating (AC) and direct residual currents (DC) – and reports an exceedance via an integrated relay output without automatically shutting down the system.
When an RCM solution is the right choice
RCM is suitable for permanent, automated monitoring of residual currents with alarming, for example for early detection of insulation faults before a shutdown occurs. Can be used as a replacement / supplement to insulation testing (part of the repeat test according to DGUV Vorschrift 3). For simple, spot residual current measurement without continuous monitoring, a basic residual current transformer (DACT) is often sufficient.

Mounting and safety
The secondary circuit of a current transformer must never be operated open during operation – before disconnecting measuring devices in the secondary circuit, it must be short-circuited. The installation and connection of the relay output to the system control should be carried out by qualified electrical personnel.
