Switching on and getting started – Every time a high-performance electrical device, power supply or motor is switched on, it puts a strain on electrical and mechanical components. Applying the maximum load from a standstill generates forces, torques and acceleration that lead to high wear over time. In addition, unwanted voltage drops in the mains voltage or reaction forces can occur, which should be avoided if possible. With the help of an inrush current limitation in the form of a soft starter such as the VersiStart II plus soft starter from Dahms, the starting behavior of a machine or system can be controlled in such a way that wear is reduced by targeted “ramping up”, components are protected and negative side effects of a direct start are avoided.

The soft starters in the Economy series from DAHMS GmbH regulate the motor voltage by means of phase-angle control using power semiconductors in two phases. This increases the motor voltage over a set ramp-up time, starting from a ramp function, up to the maximum value. As a result, the motor is started gently and overload is avoided. Once maximum power is reached, the soft starter is bypassed via the integrated relay and the motor is supplied directly with mains current. Conversely, after the system is switched off, the firing angle is continuously increased by the soft starter and the motor voltage is thus gradually reduced. The motor runs down gently and smoothly over the preset time. Both the ramp-up and ramp-down times, as well as the starting voltage, are set on the VersiStart II plus soft starter via a potentiometer. In addition, VersiStart II plus features a boost function that is activated via a HIGH level (24VDC) at terminal “Y1 BOOST” and increases the starting voltage for 0.2 s to enable better breakaway in sluggish applications.

With the soft starters in the VersiStart II plus series, DAHMS offers, as an extension of its extensive product segment, a selection of two-phase-controlled soft starters with microcontroller control for easy installation or snap-on mounting on 35 mm DIN rails.

When developing the new VersiStart II plus product series, the focus was on the requirements of industrial high-current systems and the task of reducing the switch-on and switch-off torque that occurs with three-phase motor drives and avoiding current peaks. Application examples include conveyor systems, packaging machines, transport systems and assembly lines as well as other systems in mechanical engineering, but also pumps, fans and ventilators or door and gate drives. In all conceivable areas of application, the VersiStart II plus soft starters are a cost-effective replacement for star-delta switches. They ensure a high starting frequency and reduce wear in the long term.

In addition to robustness and performance at maximum switching frequency, VersiStart II plus is characterized above all by its attractive price-performance ratio and wide variety. As a new product release, DAHMS presents the VersiStart II plus soft starter in five rated current variants each, from 6 A to 32 A and from 38 A to 105 A.
